Duncan: We Need to Fix NCLB This Year

According to No Child Left Behind regulations, almost 80,000 of the nation’s 100,000 schools are “failing.” Secretary of Education Arne Duncan addressed Congress on March 9 to insist that it is not the schools that are flawed, but the law itself.

“This law is fundamentally broken, and we need to fix it this year,” said Duncan. Last year 37% of schools missed testing targets. This year, that number could jump to as high as 82% of all public schools.

Proposed changes to the law include ending the pass-fail system for schools and determining the success of a school based on additional factors such as graduation rates.
