Teaching Experience?Posted by: Shawn Bultsma |
Since the profession of school counseling has opened up to include non-teachers being trained as school counselors, there has been much debate surrounding the following question: Does one need to be trained as a teacher to be an effective professional school counselor?
Time for you to weigh in on this issue. What are your thoughts?

No, I don't think it is a requirement, but it goes along way in helping a school counselor establish "cred" with the Teachers!! It is hard to share the joys and challenges with a Teacher if you have never been on the stage all alone in front of a class. Especially after a lesson may have flopped. Also, school culture (like any organization)has some very unique traits that often take some time to understand if you have no experience in a school other than as a student.
